“Find what it is you want, and go after it as if your life depends on it. Why? Because it does.”
Did you know that almost 70% of workers in the US are unexcited about their jobs? Neither did I. If you’re at the crossroads between high school and college, searching for your dream career, now’s the time to ask yourself: Do you want to join that 70%? No! Your job will consume 40-60 hours of your week—way too much time for you to invest in work that leaves you numb. You want to feel alive at all points of your life, not just on vacations and weekends.
So how do you find a career that will let you work as a full-time human, not a full-time zombie? How can you do what you love and love what you do? Fantastic encouragement for doing just that is in the video from RedFrost Motivation below. Write these tips on sticky notes and paste them above your desk. Stay inspired as you find your calling.
“We go through life trying to seek security and not coming outside of our comfort zone.”
Are you actually fulfilled by what you do, or are you just scared of change? We all know the benefits of contentment but the wrong kind of contentment will wear you out and suck you down. So go challenge yourself! Explore. Give new skills a whirl. Try to turn that hobby—yes, that one, the one you’re most comfortable doing at home where nobody sees you and there are no risks—into a full-time career. If you feel a bit nervous and exposed because for the first time in your life you could actually fail, then good. You’re out of your comfort zone.
“We [think] of hating our jobs as a fact of life that we all just have to deal with.”
Do you view your job as the enemy? Almost inevitably so if you see it as something you merely have to do! Money has become the chain that ties you to a job—it’s necessary for sheer survival. But this shouldn’t be why you work. Your job should be about what you love. “You want to find a craft that you love so much that you can’t wait to wake up every single day, seven days a week, and spend more time working on your passion.”
“If you want to be successful, it’s your dream and you’ve got to own it and you’ve got to be responsible for it.”
Sting! How easy is it to float through life and never pursue our passion because doing so demands work? The common excuse is that the opportunity just never showed up, but for most of us that is NOT the reason. The reason is we didn’t hustle. No one else is going to know or love your dream as well as you do. It’s up to YOU to make it happen. Be willing to pour sweat, tears, and time into your dream!
“Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.”
As you step out of your comfort zone, keep a weather eye out for the work you love. Work that needs your skills and interests. Work that feels weighty and meaningful. Work that impacts you as much as it impacts the world through you. Then your life won’t be about survival, but living!
