Rock-Solid Careers for Your Personality Part 6: Thinker

This is the sixth and last in Find Your Calling’s series “Rock-Solid Jobs for Your Personality That Make At Least $45K a Year.” Each post features five recommended careers for one of the six personalities in Find Your Calling: creator, doer, helper, organizer, persuader, and thinker.

Thinkers are curious! Natural investigators, they are scholarly and scientific and they long to understand, explain, and predict the things around them. Here are the top five careers that allow Thinkers to use their cerebral gifts. These are the favorite careers of the Find Your Calling team based on growth (which shows these careers are in high demand) and median salaries (at least $63K per year). Take note that starting salaries are lower than median salaries.

1. Software Developers. One of the best careers in the US for wages and growth, software developers are in crazy demand everywhere. They are the creative minds behind computer programs. Some develop the applications that allow people to do specific tasks on a computer (or other device) while others develop the underlying systems that run the devices or that control networks. There have been 34,000 new software developer jobs across the US since 2011 (17% growth). They offer $101K per year (median salary) but more like $82K per year if you’re new to the field.

2. Market Research Analysts. These Thinkers study the market in order to gauge people’s interest in a product. They help companies understand what products people want, who will buy them, and at what price. They’ve added 79,000 jobs since 2011 (18% growth) and offer a median salary of $63K per year, though $47K is more realistic for someone with less experience.

3. Accountants & Auditors. During tax season (and always), these guys are your friends. Accountants and auditors make sure financial records are accurate and that taxes are paid properly and on time. They’ve added a huge number of new jobs: 160,000 (14% growth). The median salary for accountants and auditors is $67K per year, closer to $53K if you’re just starting out.

4. Financial Analysts. Similar to personal financial advisors (a great career for Helper-Thinkers), financial analysts advise businesses and individuals about making investment decisions. They assess the performance of stocks, bonds, and other types of investments, then make their recommendations. Financial analysts have added 2,700 new jobs (11% growth) and offer a median salary of $81K per year. Starting salary would be more like $64K.

5. Computer Systems Analysts. These key workers bring business and IT together. They study an organization’s current computer systems, then recommend and install any new technology that could help the organization operate more efficiently and effectively. There have been 96,000 new computer systems analyst jobs since 2011 (20% growth). You would earn $84K per year (median salary) or more like $68K per year if you have less experience.
