Most Popular Career & Program Searches

Computer science. Registered nursing. Business & economics. These were among the most popular career and program searches in 2014 and 2015.

These numbers come from over two million searches on Career Coach, Emsi’s career service that colleges and universities use to help their students find the best degree programs leading to strong, high-demand careers. Career Coach has been an essential part of Emsi’s work within higher education for the better part of 15 years, and is also the headspring for Find Your Calling.

The following infographic ranks the top job and program searches and uses a color code to indicate how much the careers are expected to grow (by percent) in the real world over the next five years. Here are some cool highlights:

  • STEM jobs have been getting a lot of attention as dependably high-growth, high-salary occupations, but we see a nice split down the middle here between STEM and non-STEM jobs as students continue to search for variety. Even more heartening is the fact that the students aren’t off their rocker: Many non-STEM jobs promise solid growth from 2015 to 2020 (though wages for STEM jobs are still generally higher).
  • Health care jobs are both extremely popular and growing crazy fast. Registered nursing was the top search in both 2014 and 2015. On top of that, the fastest-growing careers are likely to be physical therapy, medical assistant, doctor, and occupational therapy—all projected to grow between 10% and 16%.
  • Fast-growing careers outside health care include computer science/IT, business & economics, and engineering.
